Education Ministry heralds major savings due to electronic auctions

Slovakia’s Education Ministry has attained more than 60-percent savings in its electronic procurement of textbooks, with the expenditures to plummet from €4.5 million to €1.5 million, said Education Minister Eugen Jurzyca to a press conference on December 13, the TASR newswire reported. The ministry has undertaken a third electronic auction that translated into considerable savings in the ministry's expenditure, Jurzyca said, adding that the number of items to be provided by the supplier will actually be even larger notwithstanding the slashed prices.

"In no case are we purchasing fewer items. The savings will go to the detriment of the supplier's profit," he said, as quoted by TASR.

Education Ministry State Secretary Jaroslav Ivančo remarked that the ministry has made savings amounting to a total of 34 percent thanks to electronic auctions alone. "This means that the money – of which we'll never have enough – can be allocated where it's really needed ... to schools, teachers and whatever pupils need of course," Ivančo said.
