The election campaign for the regional elections in Slovakia officially started at 7:00 on October 28. The campaigns of candidates for regional governors and regional parliamentary deputies of for Slovakia’s eight regions will finish 48 hours before the start of the balloting which is November 12 at 7:00, the SITA newswire wrote.
The law on regional elections just states that all candidates and political parties should get equal space to present themselves on billboards in municipalities. The pre-election moratorium starts 48 hours before the elections, during which all kinds of election promotion are banned.
The law says that public television stations do not have to provide broadcasting time for the regional election campaign. Nevertheless, the public-service STV has earmarked space for presentations of candidates and their election programmes.
Slovak public Radio will not provide space for candidates but will report on the regional elections, their importance and other related topics, such as the health-care system, social affairs and transport.
The actual balloting will be held on November 14, 2009 from 7:00 to 22:00. The Slovak Statistics Office will publish preliminary results on www.statistics.sk and www.volbysr.sk after the polling stations. The Central Election Committee will then announce the official results. SITA
