THE AROMA of Muráň’s traditional buns no longer permeates the centre of this municipality - not even on election day. The bakery responsible for the local specialty has closed.
“There are definitely people in the village who miss them,” Drahomíra Sliacka, chair of the local election committee, told the TASR newswire. “But the owner rented the building and rumour has it that Muráň buns will be baked in [nearby] Revúca.”
Despite the absence of the buns, which used to be an election day tradition, voting in the March 29 presidential election went smoothly and saw average turnout in Muráň, a village in a remote part of Banská Bystrica Region, Sliacka said.
The original Muráň buns were a regional specialty for more than 40 years. Although the recipe is public, their unique flavour was a secret. Hungry locals lured by the scents of marmalade, nougat, bilberry and poppy seeds, could buy the buns in the centre of Muráň.
