The top of the west side of Manhattan's world-famous Empire State Building was lit up in the colours of Slovakia's national flag (red, white, and blue) on August 5 in recognition of Slovakia's participation in the 2012 Olympic Games. Every night during the ongoing Olympics, all four sides of the skyscraper's observation tower will display the colours of the flags of the countries competing at the Games, the press department of Slovakia's Foreign Affairs Ministry explained to the TASR newswire on Monday, August 6.
The Empire State Building is among the most popular tourist sights in New York, and it is often lit up to mark important events related to history, sports, culture and society, both in the USA and worldwide. The 102-storey building was the tallest in the world when it was erected in 1931, however the completion of the World Trade Centre changed that in 1972. After the events of 9/11 in 2001, The Empire State Building regained its status as the tallest building in New York City, but numerous other buildings elsewhere have surpassed it and it is currently only the 22nd tallest building in the world.
