Employment in industry down by almost 16 percent

Employment in industry in Slovakia continued to fall during May 2009. Compared to a 14.8 percent year-on-year fall in April 2009, industrial employment contracted by 15.9 percent year-on-year in May, according to the Slovak Statistics Office, as reported by the SITA newswire.

The number of employees also fell in the wholesale sector by 23.1 percent, in restaurants and pubs by 20.3 percent, in distribution and repair of motor vehicles by 10.2 percent, in selected market services by 8.2 percent, in accommodation services by 6.1 percent and in the retail sector by 2.9 percent.

In contrast, employment rose by 4.7 percent in information and communication, 3.2 percent in construction and 0.8 percent in transport and storage.

On average, for the first five months of this year, the highest number of employed people was in industry, with 521,800. Of these, 471,600 worked in industrial manufacturing. The construction sector reported a labour force of 183,800 people, the retail sector 156,800, selected market services 124,400, and wholesale 113,800. 113,700 people worked in transport and storage, 38,500 in postal services, information and communications, 32,400 in restaurants and pubs, 23,400 in car sales and repair, and 10,600 in accommodation.
