Employment in industry grew 2.7 percent year-on-year in the last month of 2010. The Slovak Statistics Office also reported that the sectors of transport and storage reported a 0.7-percent increase in the number of employees compared to December 2009, the SITA newswire wrote.
Other monitored sectors saw ongoing declines in employment. The number of employees fell in the following sectors: ICT (-9.6 percent), sale and repair of motor vehicles (-4.6 percent), pubs and restaurants (-3.9 percent), accommodation (-3.1 percent), wholesale (-3 percent), selected market services (-2 percent), construction (-1.9 percent) and retail (-1 percent).
Last year, industry provided jobs for 478,800 people on average, with 430,400 employees in industrial manufacturing. The building industry had 179,600 employees, the retail sector 152,300, selected market services 120,600, the sectors of transport and storage 110,600, the wholesale sector 95,200, ICT 33,200, pubs and restaurants 28,700, sale and repair of motor vehicles 21,100 and accommodation 9,500. Compared with 2009, employment tumbled in all monitored sectors. The Statistics Office reported the steepest decline in ICT (-11.6 percent) and the wholesale sector (-11.2 percent). The number of staff members fell by 7.5 percent in pubs and restaurants and by 1.1 percent in the sectors of transport and storage.
