The civic association Stop the Triangle of Death (Stop trojuholníku smrti) and the NGOs Friends of Earth and Greenpeace have sent an open letter to the Prime Minister Robert Fico on May 19 calling on the government to take concrete steps towards decontaminating the eastern region of Slovakia from polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), the TASR newswire reported.
The activists pointed to the regions around the Chemko Strážske factory and the Zemplín region. The Environment Ministry has been ignoring the alarming situation for years, the letter reads.
“Even 25 years after the production of PCB was stopped in the factory the contamination is not decreasing,” TASR quoted from the letter.
The government should start acting on the basis of the National Realisation Plan of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, which was approved in 2006 said the environmental organisations. TASR
