TWO MEP seats for the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) are a major success for the party, and they confirm an increase in confidence among voters in SDKÚ after the change in the party leadership, Chairman Pavol Frešo told TASR after estimates on the results of the EP elections were published on Sunday.
"The election results also showed diminishing trust in Smer," said Frešo as quoted by TASR, who also believes that voters "have given another chance to the Right to come up with an alternative to the Smer party".
SDKÚ will be sending Ivan Štefanec and Eduard Kukan, to the EP for the upcoming term. Frešo said that in these two candidates people have chosen representatives of common sense and experience.
Meanwhile, nothing changes in the ranks of the Christian Democrats (KDH), whose two MEPs Anna Záborská and Miroslav Mikolášik will continue working in the EP.
People who adhere to Christian values mobilised and went to vote after all probably because they are aware of the crossroads of values at which Europe has found itself, Záborská said in her reaction to the results for TASR.
"In our campaign we preferred personal contact with people, particularly in areas in which we traditionally have high voter-support," said Záborská as quoted by TASR.
"The low turnout came as a surprise to me. My discussion with people during my campaign seemed to be livelier than five years ago," said Záborská.
