THE RULING Smer party has received the highest number of votes in the election to the European Parliament, 24.09 percent, but Robert Fico’s party has probably failed to defend its five mandates, according to unofficial estimates based on parallel counting of votes of political parties, the Sme.sk reported.
Smer will probably take four seats of Slovakia’s 13 seats in the European Parliament.
The Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) harvested 13.21 percent of the votes, thus sending two deputies to the European Parliament, according to unofficial estimates reported by SITA.
The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) got 7.75 percent of the vote and is likely to have two mandates in the EP as well. The rest of the parties will have one mandate each, the estimates suggest.
Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO) received 7.46 percent. NOVA collected 6.83 percent while Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) picked 6.66 percent of the vote. The non-parliamentary Party of the Hungarian Community (SMK) got 6.53 percent and Most-Híd collected 5.83 percent of the vote, unofficial results published by Sme.sk suggest.
Polling stations closed in Slovakia on May 24 evening, but the statistics authority, the Statistics Office, is only allowed to publish the results after voting is over in all EU member states, some of which hold the vote on Sunday, too.
Unofficial estimates show Slovakia’s turnout under 13 percent only.
