THE RULING Smer party has received the biggest number of votes in the election to the European Parliament, 25 percent, but Robert Fico’s party has probably failed to defend its five mandates, according to unofficial estimates based on parallel counting of votes of political parties, the SITA newswire reported.
Smer will probably take four seats of Slovakia’s 13 seats in the European Parliament.
Polling stations closed in Slovakia on May 24 evening, but the statistics authority, the Statistics Office, is only allowed to publish the results after voting is over in all EU member states, some of which hold the vote on Sunday, too.
The Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) harvested 13 percent of the votes, thus sending two deputies to the European Parliament, according to unofficial estimates reported by SITA.
The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO), NOVA, Most-Híd, Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) and the Party of the Hungarian Community (SMK) will have one mandate each, the estimates suggest.
However, SDKÚ or OĽaNO might get one extra mandate each, the Sme.sk suggested.
The Slovak Spectator will provide more detailed reporting on the election results after 23:00 on May 25.
Unofficial estimates show Slovakia’s turnout at 13 percent only.
