Slovakia’s opposition parties should put up a single presidential candidate and also engage in closer co-operation in the 2013 municipal elections, Wilfried Martens, president of the European People's Party (EPP), said after a meeting with Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) leader Pavol Frešo in Brussels on Wednesday, October 10. The EPP is a European-level umbrella group of parties on the right of the political spectrum, including the SDKÚ.
Frešo told the TASR newswire that Martens welcomes the present co-operation among three centre-right wing parties in Slovakia, two of which – the SDKÚ and the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) – are EPP members, with Most-Híd currently applying for membership.
Along with MEPs Eduard Kukan and Peter Šťastný (both SDKÚ), Frešo also met EPP parliamentary group chairman Joseph Daul, who praised the personnel changes on the SDKÚ's executive following the unsuccessful 2012 election. Daul also conveyed his hope that co-operation among the right-wing parties in Slovakia would improve, particularly between the SDKÚ, KDH and Most-Híd.
