While Halloween (October 31) is spreading throughout Slovakia via company and school parties, All Saints Day (November 1) is still viewed as an intimate family occasion, ethnologist Zuzana Benusková from the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) said, as reported by the TASR newswire.
This means that the American-style Halloween is not obliterating the true sense of commemorating the dead in Slovakia, she added.
"People make a distinction between their private lives and work. It's a well-known fact that feasts are becoming ever more 'privatised', while Halloween is still observed on a kind of institutionalised basis," said the ethnologist.
The family tops the list of priorities in Slovakia, and All Saints Day gives people an opportunity to gather together with their relatives, she added.
