Voters from other member countries of the European Union (EU) can participate in the June elections for members of the European Parliament (EP) while living in Slovakia, the SITA newswire reported.
The conditions are that they are 18 year of age or older, they have not been deprived of their voting right in their home country and they have permanent residence in Slovakia. However, they must have asked a town or village where they live to inscribe them in the list of voters before April 27, the Central Election Commission (ÚVK) registrar Lívia Škultétyova told SITA.
Citizens of other EU countries who do not have a permanent residence permit in Slovakia may also vote in Slovakia. The condition is a stay in Slovakia of longer than three months. They also had to apply to the local department of the alien police and subsequently ask a town or village where they live to inscribe them in the list of voters by April 27. Similarly, Slovak citizens living in other EU country can vote abroad.
Škultétyova said that individual countries exchange voter data and thus it cannot happen that a person votes in his home EU country and concurrently in the EU country where s/he lives. The exact number of voters who make use of this possibility will be known after the elections.
Over 4.3 million Slovaks can vote for their 13 representatives in the European Parliament on Saturday, June 6 from 7:00 until 22:00. Voters will choose not only their favorite among political parties but can also give their preference votes to two candidates from a political party. Seventeen political parties, registered by the Central Election Commission on April 7, will contest the EP elections and those parties have put forth a total of 185 candidates. SITA
