Progress in fulfilling the Lisbon Strategy, designed to make the EU the world's most competitive economy by 2010, was under the microscope on September 18 in Brussels by national coordinators along with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.
According to Slovak Deputy Prime Minister Dušan Čaplovič, responsible for the development of the knowledge-based society, the co-ordinators concurred that during the Slovenian presidency of the EU, beginning in January, it will be necessary to "radicalize" individual policies if the fulfillment of the stipulated goals is to be begun.
He also said that the fulfillment of the Lisbon Strategy is being influenced and threatened by many circumstances to which the EU has to react. Currently, Slovakia is handicapped in fulfilling some of the goals of the Lisbon Strategy, Čaplovič says, because the country is trying to enter Eurozone, and therefore has to struggle to fulfill the Maastricht criteria.
