Chief of the EU European External Action Service (EEAS) Catherine Ashton appointed Slovak diplomat Miroslav Lajčák as head of the EEAS’s department for relations with the western Balkans, Eastern Partnership and Russia on Tuesday, December 14.
Lajčák, a former Slovak foreign minister and international high representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, said his portfolio’s priorities were hard to define, because “there’s constantly something going on” in the region he has been appointed to cover, the TASR newswire reported him as saying. Spokesman Ľuboš Schwarzbacher said the Slovak Foreign Ministry welcomed Lajčák’s appointment, TASR wrote.
