EUROPEAN Commission President José Manuel Barroso and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy congratulated Andrej Kiska on his election as Slovak president, and said that they believe that he will contribute towards resolving challenges faced by Slovakia and the EU.
"I am confident that under your presidency, the Slovak Republic will prosper within the EU, and continue to be a positive force for European democratic development. The many challenges faced by Slovakia and by the EU today can best be tackled through co-operation among European partners. I count on your active involvement in communicating the unique European project to your citizens and in reinforcing the European Union's role as a strong player on the global scene and in protecting its citizens," said Barroso in a statement released on the European Commission website.
Van Rompuy also expressed his "sincere appreciation for outgoing President Ivan Gašparovič for his role as head of state during the last 10 years, seeing his country through its accession to the European Union and its adhesion to the euro currency".
Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski congratulated Kiska on the telephone and invited him to visit Poland, according to Polish news agency PAP.
