THE ADMINISTRATIVE division of the country falls exclusively in the hands of member states. If Slovakia decides to change its official regional divisions, the EU will not interfere with the decision, the head of the press department of the European Commission representation in Slovakia, Andrej Králik, told the SITA newsiwire.
After the second round of the regional elections takes place on November 23, the ruling Smer party plans to discuss abolishing Slovakia’s current regional administrative division. Instead of the current eight self-governing regions, Smer politicians are contemplating returning to the old model of four regions: western Slovakia, central Slovakia, eastern Slovakia and Bratislava, the Sme daily reported on November 11.
Prime Minister Robert Fico has already announced that he wants the state authorities to be represented in the regional governments, SITA reported.
The European Commission recommended that Slovakia change the law on public service to strengthen the independence of public service and to improve human resources management in public administration, SITA reported Králik as saying.
