A total of 65 percent of Slovaks do not know what does the word ‘biodiversity’ means but the worst lack of knowledge in this area was in Denmark (70 percent) and Cyprus (73.2 percent), reports a Eurobarometer survey published on April 9, the TASR newswire wrote.
Slovaks also have a low public awareness of the risk of certain species’ extinction, as 35 percent of Slovaks claimed to have no information on the subject. Only 24 percent of Slovaks said they felt well-informed in this field, a drop from 27 percent in 2007.
Despite these figures, 68 percent of Slovak respondents said that they also do something to save the variety of species on the planet, TASR wrote. The most environmentally-conscious EU nation seems to be Germans, as 59 percent feel they are well-informed about the necessity to strive for biodiversity preservation. Within the EU, the average rate in this respect proved to be 37 percent, with 17 percent of all people within EU saying that the loss of biodiversity on Earth personally matters to them.
