Slovaks trust European institutions more than they do domestic institutions with the Slovak Parliament being trusted by 37 percent while the European Parliament (EP) is trusted by two-thirds of Slovaks, according to a Eurobarometer poll released September 21 in Bratislava, the TASR newswire reported.
Slovakia is the EU country with the greatest confidence in the EP, according to Andrea Elscheková-Matisová from the Representation of the European Commission in Slovakia and Ivan Kuhn from the M. R. Štefánik Conservative Institute, which co-operated in carrying out the Eurobarometer National Report. The survey was conducted between June 13-30 and included 1,065 respondents.
"As for (overall) confidence in European institutions, the EU is trusted by 65 percent of Slovaks, ranking the country second (after Belgium) among the 27 member countries. The most trusted EU institution among Slovaks remains the EP," said Elscheková-Matisová, adding that Slovakia is at the top in this category among the 27 member countries.
The Eurobarometer survey also found that 66 percent of Slovaks consider Slovakia's EU membership a good thing. "It's the highest percentage since Slovakia entered the EU," noted Elscheková-Matisová. A majority (80 percent) of Slovaks think, according to the survey, that they profit from EU membership. TASR
