Exactly one thousand yellow roses were handed out by the Europe Direct (ED) Information Centre to mark Europe Day in the town of Prievidza on Saturday, May 9, the TASR newswire was told by Slavomíra Hulecová, the ED project manager from Trencin.
Each rose was accompanied by leaflets in the shape of the five-pointed European star with contact information, e-mail addresses and telephone numbers through which members of the public can receive answers to questions relating to the European Union.
The centre also distributed informational leaflets about the elections to the European Parliament which will take place on June 6. The aim of ED's promotion was to boost the voter turnout among Slovaks for the European Parliament elections, said Hulecová.
The Europe Direct Information Centre (ICED), the Regional Development Agency and the town council of Lučenec in Banská Bystrica region also called on the public to take part in the European Parliament elections on June 6 at a similar event.
Present at this event were European Commission representatives in Slovakia and employees of the European Parliament Information Office. They said it is important for Slovakia to be represented by MEPs who will defend its national interests while professing European values at the same time.
Only a high turnout in the EP elections can ensure that the selection of MEPs will be as objective as possible, TASR was told by Lučenec's ICED project manager, Michaela Hrnčiarová. TASR
