The European Commission's statistical arm, Eurostat, has predicted that there will be nearly 850,000 fewer people living in Slovakia in 2060 than today, the Pravda daily wrote.
Despite the decrease, Slovakia is expected to see the number of its retired people in 2060 rise by nearly one million, coupled with a dramatic drop in the number of children under 14. Should such a scenario materialise, more than a third of Slovakia's population in 2060 will be over 65.
Branislav Bleha of Comenius University's demography department has suggested combining measures to boost immigration and local population growth. TASR
