The jobless rate among young people in Slovakia was the fifth highest in the European Union in November 2012 when one in three Slovaks under the age of 25 was without work, according to data presented by the Eurostat statistics office.
“The crisis has done its work and the [resulting] worse economic developments have also affected job applicants younger than 25 years of age,” said Eva Sadovská, analyst with Poštová Banka, as quoted by the TASR newswire. “While one in five young people was jobless five years ago – in November 2007, it is one in three now.”
Sadovská added that problems might emerge from the poor links between the education system and the job market.
“The high numbers [of young jobless] are related to a lack of experience and of working habits [on the part of young people],” the analyst pointed out.
Young applicants also appear to have inappropriately high requirements vis-à-vis salaries and insufficient foreign-language skills.
Meanwhile, the situation is even worse in EU-member countries that have suffered most due to the crisis, namely Italy, Portugal, Greece and Spain. More than 50 percent of young Greeks and Spaniards are without jobs, TASR reported on January 18.
