Every eighth citizen of Slovakia, or 13.3 percent of the population, lives in poverty, according to the European Union's definition of the term.
The EU says that Slovak families that must live on an income of less that Sk5,631 a month per person fall into this category.
Half of Slovakia's families live on less than Sk9,000 per family member per month, the Pravda daily wrote.
The results come from a new survey by the Slovak Statistics Bureau conducted according to EU methodology.
The most endangered are children up to the age of 15, of whom 17.8 percent are below the poverty line.
