INFOSTAT estimates that approximately Sk3 billion (€78 million) in bribes was paid out to physicians, judges, police officers and prosecutors.
The average annual bribe was around Sk5704 (€148), says Viera Hajnovičova of the Infostat.
Bribery is flourishing not only in education and healthcare, but also in customs offices and banks, where customers may bribe for favourable loan conditions, the Hospodárske noviny business daily reported.
Last year, 31 percent of Slovaks bribed someone while most of the bribes (71 percent) went to the healthcare sector, the courts (34 percent), education (31 percent) and local government (20 percent).
