THREE former prisoners from the US detention facility at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, have been given permission to permanently reside in the Slovak Republic. At the same time, they were moved to the integration centre of the Interior Ministry’s Migration Office in Zvolen where they will take part in a six-month integration programme, the SITA newswire reported.
The three prisoners, from Egypt, Azerbaijan and Tunisia, were escorted to Slovakia from Guantánamo at the end of January. The three men announced a hunger strike in a police detention facility for illegal migrants in Medveďov in mid June in protest against the living conditions of their detention. As a condition of their residency, the prisoners have agreed to learn Slovak. Slovakia, on the other hand, has promised to help them find jobs and to provide accommodation for them.
