Three former prisoners from the US detention facility in Guantanamo were given permission to permanently reside in the Slovak Republic. At the same time, they were moved to the integration centre of the Interior Ministry’s Migration Office in Zvolen where they will take part in six-month integration programme, the SITA newswire reported.
The three prisoners, from Egypt, Azerbaijan and Tunisia, were escorted from Guantanamo to Slovakia at the end of January. The three men announced a hunger strike in a police detention facility for illegal migrants in Medveďov in mid June in protest against conditions of their detention.
Slovakia’s conditions when accepting the former Guantanamo prisoners included that all would learn the Slovak language, receive accommodation and Slovakia would help take care of jobs for them.
