State-run Eximbanka, which exists to provide support for exports and imports carried out by Slovak companies, will provide help to Slovak Shipyards Komárno, in Nitra Region, according to a government decision taken on Wednesday, March 21. Eximbanka, possibly with the help of commercial banks, is set to fund the construction of three ships this year and another three or four in 2013, the TASR newswire wrote.
The mayor of the town of Komárno, Anton Marek, drew attention last month to the plight of Slovak Shipyards, which has orders on its books but ran out of money to fund production after several banks, including Eximbanka, turned down its requests for a loan, citing the economic crisis. The shipyards, on the River Danube, were established during the Austro-Hungarian period and currently employ 289 people, with another 200-250 external workers. The shipyards’ financial problems threatened to prompt dismissals at the company, in a district with an unemployment rate of 19 percent.
