Experts differ on whether volcanic ash cloud has come to Slovakia

For the second time in a short period, the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull erupted during the weekend of May 8-9, sending clouds of ash throughout Europe. Eugen Lexmann, a meteorologist with the Slovak Hydro-Meteorological Institute, told the TASR newswire that one ash cloud arrived in Slovakia and covered practically its whole territory.

“It reaches from the ground up to about 6,000 metres height,” the meteorologist said.

But the SITA newswire wrote just a short while later, “The air-space over Slovakia is clear and experts do not expect any change in situation soon.”

“I have no information about volcanic ash contamination of the air-space,” said Peter Bruna, head of Slovakia’s Aviation Office. The M.R. Štefánik Airport in Bratislava (BTS) has cancelled flights on Sunday May 9 only to and from Pisa in Italy. However, the situation is being monitored and assessed every six hours, Bruna told the Sme daily.
