The municipality of Vranov nad Topľou is participating with companies from Iceland in a project aimed at providing geothermal energy for central heating and reactional purposes.
Town mayor Tomáš Leso said that municipal deputies agreed to the establishment of a Slovak-Icelandic company ENEX Vranov nad Topľou in which five companies, three of which are from Iceland, are represented.
Part of the project is the elaboration of a study in cooperation with the Technical University in Košice on geothermal energy usage. The study hopes to point out the possibilities for using geothermal energy.
The municipality wants to use geothermal energy to heat family houses, flats, administrative buildings and perhaps even thermal outdoor swimming pools. Costs should range between EUR 100,000 to EUR 200,000.
Experts from Iceland, who have experience in using this kind of energy, have already carried out several probes and are satisfied with the results.
Leso said there is thermal water at a depth of 3,400 meters with a temperature of 135 Celsius. He further stated that companies from Iceland have already showed an interest in cooperating with other local governments in the Zemplín region in eastern Slovakia.
