After previous events in Montreal, Chile and Prague, the prestigious international Expo Sciences International (ESI) 2011 competition, featuring gifted students aged under 21, came to Bratislava on Tuesday, July 19. The event is being held at Bratislava's Incheba complex until July 21, with participants representing 50 countries from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin and North America.
A total of 13 categories will be evaluated by a panel of 40 judges. Among the 629 participants, Slovakia will be represented by 29 young scientists who are set to compete with 19 projects. They include Marek Buchman, who has a project aimed at reducing the number of diodes used in television sets. Buchman, who will begin studying at Oxford University in October, has already succeeded with the project in similar competitions held in the USA and Turkey.
"It's an honour for Bratislava to host such an event," said the city’s mayor, Milan Ftáčnik, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
