Discussions on mutual relations as well as joint stances on current world issues were held by foreign affairs ministers from the EU and Russia in New York on Friday, the TASR newswire was told on September 26 by the Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman, Peter Stano. Slovakia was represented by Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák who is leading the Slovak delegation at the current UN General Assembly session in New York.
Lajčák said ministers discussed the Middle East and Afghanistan – issues on which they have largely identical stances. They also discussed issues in which they differ in opinions such as Georgia and its territorial integrity. They have also focused on the Iranian nuclear programme, which represents one of the main global issues at present.
All ministers expect that Iran will co-operate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and that it will answer questions regarding the international community's concerns about the nature of the country's nuclear programme. EU-Russia diplomacy heads are meeting on a regular basis. The talks took place during the so-called 'EU-ministers week' on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
