On Monday, May 27 the head of the parliamentary committee to oversee the activities of the military intelligence (VS), Martin Fedor, handed the file that details alleged embezzlement at the former military intelligence service (VSS, now merged into the VS) to Special Prosecutor Dušan Kováčik. The daily Sme had earlier delivered this document to Fedor, and also to the Special Prosecutor’s Office (ÚŠP).
ÚŠP spokesperson Andrea Predajňová informed the TASR newswire of this development, adding that the documents are deemed top classified, and thus all people who learned about the document and its contents are forbidden from discussing it in compliance with the law on protection of classified facts. She added that the ÚŠP will start investigating whether the misdemeanour of threatening classified and secret information has been committed.
On May 16 Sme published details from a 134-page report which alleged large-scale embezzlement of public funds by employees at the former VSS during the first government of Robert Fico (2006-2010). The daily says it received the document anonymously, and that it was probably based on an internal investigation of the VSS that began under former defence minister Ľubomír Galko.
The report included information about the purchase and reconstruction of an expensive residential property in Bratislava, which the state sold at a loss to a former VSS officer.
