BOARDING schools for Roma children are the only solution to the issue of the Roma minority, Prime Minister Robert Fico stated after an evaluation visit he paid to the office of Deputy Prime Minister for Minorities Dušan Čaplovič on March 8, the SITA newswire reported.
Fico said that a much more radical attitude is expected in the future than was previously the case, adding that heads of towns and villages are asking for such a solution.
“They expect that something other than just constant declarations by which we are endlessly bound, that something else will come than those attempts to influence or correct something ad hoc through various funds,” Fico said, as quoted by SITA.
The non-governmental organisation Amnesty International stated that boarding schools for Roma children would not contribute to resolving the problem of educating members of the Roma community and would only deepen the segregation of Roma.
The prime minister said he had expected criticism and wanted to avoid it by preventive dialogues with European Union bodies. He said he would also consider the opinions of experts regarding the future objectives of Roma boarding schools or the age at which children should be sent to them.
