Smer chairman Robert Fico allegedly wanted to do a deal with Speaker Richard Sulík (Freedom and Solidarity (SaS)) over selection of the general prosecutor, Most-Híd chairman Béla Bugár said on Tuesday, December 14, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
In return for giving his Smer party’s support for ruling coalition candidate Jozef Čentéš, Fico had sought to secure for Smer the post of “General Prosecutor Deputy for criminal law,” said Bugár. According to the organisational structure of the institution, these powers are vested in the Second Secretary of the General Prosecutor by law. “If my information is correct, they [Smer] were interested in doing a certain trade,” said Bugár, who said he believed that such an important issue should not be subject to horse-trading.
As for Smer’s call for it and the coalition to find a joint candidate, Bugár does not think such an effort is feasible. Fico, in his account of the meeting with Sulík, said: “We talked about rules of procedure and the need for having the general prosecutor’s election carried out in December. I also maintained that it might be appropriate for them to stop nominating party-affiliated candidates but try to find a candidate who could also enjoy the support of the opposition,” said Fico.
