Opposition Smer party leader Robert Fico said the issue of early elections may be brought up following Slovakia's expected entry into the European Union in 2004.

Prior to the September 2002 elections Fico had hoped to become the country's prime minister but was left out of the new cabinet as four right-wing parties lead by PM Mikulas Dzurinda agreed to form the ruling coalition.

Although reassuring that Smer was not going to do anything that would threaten Slovakia's EU integration, Fico insisted that he saw no reason why the election of Slovak members of the EU parliament could not be combined with a national parliamentary vote.
