Fico: EU only errand boys of America regarding some issues

The Slovak PM opined that relations between Russia and America should be revised without delay – and that sanctions against Russia should be scrapped, first by the US and then by EU as a whole.

Donald Trump’s tenure as the president of the United States might positively influence relations between the US and the EU, Prime Minister Robert Fico said on RTVS’ political talk show O 5 Minút 12 (i.e. Five Minutes to Twelve) on January 29, adding that relations between Russia and America should be revised without delay.

“I’m quite curious myself to see the development of sanctions against the Russian Federation because we’re only the errand boys of America when it comes to certain issues,” he said, as quoted by the TASR newswire.

“Even here, I think that we paid more attention to what the United States was saying, as opposed to what we really wanted in the EU ourselves,” claimed Fico, who considers the sanctions to be nonsense and detrimental to the EU. “I hope that if the United States scraps the sanctions, the EU will follow suit quickly because all the sanctions do is to make us score against our own goals.”

It is necessary to stop efforts aimed at a regime change along with global exports of ideology promoted by the EU and United States, Fico opines. “Every country has a right to choose its own style of governance in domestic affairs,” he added.

Trump’s statements concerning less American involvement in European military issues will push Europe into taking significant security measures and to engage in closer cooperation in the military sphere. “Europe must become a stronger global player,” the Slovak PM concluded.
