Fico: Five conditions for next government

Smer party leader Robert Fico has said that if he captures the PM’s chair after September elections, he will insist the next government fulfill five main planks from Smer’s election platform by the end of 2003, or he will resign.

The five demands include: passage of a law requiring ‘suspiciously wealthy’ people to demonstrate the origin of their wealth; approval of a new electoral system; reduction of state spending and welfare system abuse; and the creation of special teams to investigate and prosecute serious economic crime.

Smer is running second to former PM Vladimír Mečiar’s Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) party on a law-and-order platform.
