Fico was admitted to the University Hospital in Košice first and was later transported to Bratislava.

“In the hospital he was diagnosed with a broken Achilles tendon,” Fico’s spokesperson Beatrice Szabóová told the Sme daily, and confirmed that he was going to undergo surgery in Bratislava on Sunday evening.

The campaign and the programme of the prime minister will be adjusted to his health condition, according to Szabóová.

Fico was a member of the team of older Smer members who were playing against young social democrats in the promo match. He managed to score two goals before getting hurt.

“About a minute before the end of the match Fico suddenly fell on the ground,” one of the spectators described for the Sme daily, adding that Košice Mayor Richard Raši (also of Smer) immediately provided first aid to Fico and called an ambulance.
