OPPOSITION Smer party leader Robert Fico, the front-runner ahead of tomorrow's elections, believes that the next government will be formed of parties from both the current ruling coalition and opposition.
Fico's Smer leads in the polls, but is expected to receive a significantly lower share of actual ballots than indicated by its voter preferences. Despite its popularity ahead of general elections four years ago, Smer came third and ended up in opposition, as many Smer supporters did not vote.
According to the latest poll carried out by the Statistics Bureau between June 3 and 12, Smer leads the field with 28.5 percent support, followed by the opposition Movement for a Democratic Slovakia with 12.9 percent and PM Mikuláš Dzurinda's Slovak Democratic and Christian Union with 12.7 percent.
The Hungarian Coalition Party posted 10.3 percent support, the nationalist Slovak National Party 9.7 percent, and the Christian Democratic Movement 8.9 percent. The only other party to secure over the 5 percent threshold for winning seats in parliament was the Slovak Communist Party with 5.1 percent, the SITA news wire wrote.
