ROBERT Fico, chairman of the left-wing Smer party that won the recent parliamentary elections, publicly rejected for the first time on June 25 the idea of forming a so-called grand coalition with the Slovak Christian and Democratic Union (SDKÚ).
Therefore, only two other coalitions seem possible: Smer – Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) – Christian Democratic Party (KDH) and Smer – Slovak National Party (SNS) – Movement for Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), the daily SME wrote.
A Smer – KDH – SNS coalition could also be considered, but Vladimír Palko, the vice chairman of KDH, has ruled it out. He has also rejected joining a coalition of the right-wing parties: SDKÚ – KDH – SMK – HZDS.
“It can’t work with the SDKÚ,” Fico said in TV Markíza. “Such a government would be absolutely not function, and would’t be good.”
