Fico unveils saints' statue in Kom

THE LAST unveiling ceremony attended by Robert Fico as prime minister took place in Komárno on July 4, where he unveiled a statue of Ss Cyril and Methodius on the eve of the Slovak national holiday commemorating the two saints, the SITA newswire reported.

The ceremony was accompanied by expressions of sympathy for the prime minister but also by a chorus of boos, sounds of sirens and shouts of disapproval.

The statue was relocated from the local Matica Slovenská building to a busy, newly-opened roundabout on Kossuth Square in Komárno.

In his speech, Fico stressed that the statue’s new location at the junction of roads to Bratislava, Budapest and Nové Zámky is a symbol of solidarity and of the united Europe, the SITA newswire reported.
