Dubious financial dealings of Smer-SD party and its reluctance to provide an explanation has led the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) to decide to rule out Smer from any possible post-election co-operation, KDH Chairman Ján Figeľ said after the session of the party leadership held on May 24, the TASR newswire wrote.
He described the decision as being for the good of Slovakia and for the sake of restoring law and order. As recently as last week, KDH said it was willing to accept the prospect of a coalition with Smer as a last resort. This no longer holds true.
“KDH is really serious when it says no to Smer,” said Figeľ, according to whom the party is even willing to run the risk of winding up in opposition. KDH had already excluded the Movement for Democratic Slovakia (HZDS)from any potential co-operation and no discussions are envisaged with the Slovak National Party (SNS), added Figeľ to TASR.
“A week ago, documents emerged that incriminate Smer of illegal financial dealings, which cast doubts on the legitimacy of democratic institutions and public procurement processes, as well as the granting of mandates and public posts," said Figeľ, adding that KDH has filed a criminal complaint on these concerns.
