The repeat voting to select a new General Prosecutor will take place at the regular 17th parliamentary session in May, the chairman of the Christian Democratic Movement, Ján Figeľ, said after the Coalition Council session on April 26, the TASR newswire reported.
Figeľ, who hosted the meeting, said that the election of a new General Prosecutor will be scheduled for the beginning of the parliamentary session.
"We think that this may comply with the findings of the Constitutional Court," said Figeľ to TASR. The court last week ordered parliament to repeat the election because MPs took their ballot papers out of the voting area instead of immediately casting them, thus violating the rights of candidate Dobroslav Trnka. Figeľ reported that the coalition respects the findings of the Constitutional Court so the election will be by secret ballot.
Speaker of Parliament Richard Sulík (Freedom and Solidarity party) refused to reveal whether the coalition will use any form of obstruction to prevent Trnka from being elected due to possible votes of undisciplined coalition lawmakers.
He announced that the coalition insists on its plans to change several kinds of elections from secret ones into open ones, including the election of the General Prosecutor. Parliament has approved legislation dealing with this but President Ivan Gašparovič vetoed the bill. Sulík believes parliament will override the veto.
