Ján Filc, who as head coach led the Slovak national ice-hockey team to its greatest moments of glory, was put back in charge of the team on June 26, the Slovak Ice-hockey Association (SZLH) has announced.
Filc, who is now SZLH vice-president, has signed a two-year contract that begins as of this July 1, following unanimous approval of his appointment in line with a proposal by SZLH head Juraj Široký.
"I've accepted this post because as a member of the SZLH management, I feel responsible for the way our ice-hockey is progressing," said Filc.
Filc was appointed head coach of the Slovak ice-hockey team for the first time in 1999, following his success as head coach at the 1999 World Under-20 Ice-hockey Championships in Canada, where the Slovak team won the bronze medal. As head coach of the senior team, he immediately went on to win the silver medal at the IIHF Ice-hockey World Championships in St. Petersburg in 2000.
At the World Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2002, he led the Slovak team to a historic overall victory, before giving up the post shortly afterwards. He became a member of the SZLH executive committee and later SZLH vice-president, stepping in temporarily as the team's head coach during the 2004 World Cup of Hockey in Canada. TASR
