Following a similar announcement recently by Prime Minister Robert Fico, further changes in the setting of taxes and levies were announced by Finance Minister Ján Počiatek on May 13.
The changes should include, among others, expanding the tax base or cancelling the upper limits for applying levies with an eye towards garnering higher state incomes, the TASR newswire wrote.
Počiatek told journalists that the measures would enable the government “to secure what we want - to provide more finance for certain services, especially education, healthcare, and the social system.” In the minister's opinion, Slovakia has one of the lowest tax burdens in Europe, while the opposition would like to decrease it even further. The current government, however, has a different approach. “A strong state, and a higher rate of [income] redistribution,” explained Počiatek. TASR
