Fire damage at Krásna Hôrka Castle estimated at €8 million

A preliminary estimate of the damage caused by the March 10 fire at Krásna Hôrka Castle, in Košice Region, suggests it will cost approximately €8 million to repair, Jozef Tanzer from Generali Slovensko, the main insurer of the castle, told the TASR newswire.

Outgoing Culture Minister Daniel Krajcer said that the ministry has already made €2 million available and that it also plans to allocate more money from reserves. Moreover, local people have started a fund-raising campaign which will continue until March 2013.

During a press conference held on March 20 the head of the Slovak National Museum (SNM), Rastislav Púdelka, confirmed that about 90 percent of the exhibits from the castle museum were rescued and had been moved to other museums in Betliar and Košice.

The fire, which almost completely destroyed the roof of the medieval castle, broke out on March 10, apparently after two local boys accidentally set fire to grass on the castle hill while trying to light cigarettes.
