The road connecting the village of Cabaj with Trnovec nad Váhom in the Nitra Region has been closed due to a fire in the fields near the village of Močenok, Nitra Firefighter and Rescue Corps spokesman Viliam Pánsky told the TASR newswire on Wednesday, July 24.
“According to the so far unconfirmed information, the fire has been spreading to more field locations. The road has been shut down due to heavy smoke," said Pánsky.
Extremely hot and dry weather caused a number of other fires this week. Firefighters had their hands full on Wednesday with a forest fire close to the village of Nová Polianka in the High Tatras shortly after noon, Prešov Firefighter and Rescue Corps operational officer Pavol Palša told TASR.
A number of fire engines and two dozen firefighters from Poprad, Mengušovce and the High Tatras were dispatched to the site where an area of some 50 square metres was ablaze on terrain with moderately difficult access. The cause of both fires is under investigation.
A third fire was reported in the town of Michalovce in eastern Slovakia. A caravan containing 22 beehives and a small structure on Partizánska Street burned down in a fire reported Wednesday afternoon, the SITA newswire wrote. Six firefighters with two fire trucks had to extinguish the flames while being attacked by bees. According to initial estimates, the damage amounted to approximately €10,000. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
