Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) Chemistry Institute senior researcher Ján Tkáč has become the first Slovak to receive a prestigious European Research Council grant.
On Thursday, August 16 Tkáč said, as quoted by the TASR newswire, that the project aimed at the medical application of biochips had already been submitted before he finally defended it in front of a 15-member committee in Brussels this year. The work on the project is expected to start in the autumn or in early winter and is scheduled to take approximately five years. The amount of funding has not been determined as yet, but Tkáč estimates that the total grant amount will be around €1.5 million. His project, called 'Electrochemical lectin and glycan biochips integrated with nanostructures', is aimed at applying biochips in deciphering glycocodes, which in practice could help to develop new natural vaccines and medications as an alternative to antibiotics. It could bring advances in diagnosing cancer, for example.
