ALMOST 15 years after the fall of the communist regime, one of its top representatives has been jailed.
Karol Hoffman, former member of the Central Bureau of the Communist Party, was sentenced to prison in the Czech Republic for sabotage during the occupation of the former Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact armies in 1968, the daily SME wrote.
Hoffman ordered the national radio switched off during the night of the occupation to prevent the Central Bureau from broadcasting its condemnation of the invasion.
Hoffman claims that he did not violate any law and does not regret his conduct, saying that it was the only way to save socialism.
Former dissidents approve of sending Hoffman, 80, to jail.
Marian Gula of the Institute of the Memory of the Nation believes that the institute will propose the criminal prosecution of other top communist officials by the end of the year.
