Čongrády, reportedly the leader of the Sýkorovci criminal group, was shot dead at age 36 on September 9, 2004 in front of a pizzeria in Pečnianska Street in the Petržalka area of Bratislava. Čongrády was leaving the pizzeria and entering an armoured Mercedes parked in front of the building when he was shot.

The murder was committed directly under the view of a city-police street camera. Another man, also an alleged member of the Sýkorovci gang, was injured during the shooting. The gunmen fled in a white car registered in the Czech Republic which had been earlier stolen. Shortly afterwards, police found the car afire at a crossroad heading towards Lamač. Sub-machine guns and pistols were found inside.
